What Does Geotag Photos Mean?

A Geotag is hidden data stored inside an image file, called EXIF metadata (Exchangeable Image File Format), that records the exact spot on Earth where the picture was taken.

If you Geo tag photo online, a web-based tool adds location data such as longitude, latitude, and elevation to the digital image file.

What Is Geotagging?

Geotagging is the process of saving location data in a hidden file so you can share video or photo details on social media; the location tag also lets you manually pin a post or picture to a specific place on a map using various tools or apps.

How to Geotag a Photo Online

1. Upload Your Photo

Open your preferred geotagging online tool, then click the upload button or drag and drop the image file.

2. Choose the Location

Use the interactive digital map to find the destination, then drag the map marker to the exact spot where the photo was taken, or use the search bar to find the specific address.

3. Add GPS Coordinates

If you know the image coordinates (longitude and latitude), manually fill in the fields. The tool converts the EXIF metadata and injects it into the file details.

4. Download the Geotagged Photo

Review the photo geolocation, then download and save the new image. Then complete the process by embedding the location data into the device.

Geotag Photos Online with Our Free Tool (feature → user benefit)

We provide a geotagging tool that allows users to upload their images and automatically or manually enter the image coordinates (latitude and longitude) into the metadata – EXIF data of the photos through a web browser to geotag images.

Why Add GPS Location to a Photo?

Travel & Personal Photo Organization

Adding GPS lets organisations capture accurate location data and map images to places, then instantly filter by city, location, landmark, or country, eliminating the need to sort city- or region-based image coordinates manually.

Field Surveys & Documentation

Environmentalists, construction crews, and engineers use image coordinates to collect samples and spot hazards or problems in construction progress.

Real Estate & Property Photos

Real estate sellers and investors use geotagging extensively to locate properties, help buyers learn about neighbourhoods, and organise portfolios by location and area.

Local Business & Location-Based Work

Delivery drivers, workers, technicians and surveyors use geotag images to show job completion. It allows easy location verification and management.

School, Research & Project Documentation

Researchers use geotag images to map fieldwork and track archaeological findings.

Why Geotag Photos?

Geotagging provides real-world geographic location data. It helps sort, search, and map digital files to specific locations, and it allows search engines to link a business’s visual content and list to a physical address to boost local search rankings.

It enables sharing, allowing viewers to share stories with real-time location data and recommend them to nearby viewers.

Geotag Photos Online – Add GPS Location to Your Photos

To Geotag Photos online, upload the file or drag and drop it in the required format, such as JPEG, WebP, PNG, or HEIC.

Click the interactive map and type the place name and image coordinates (latitude and longitude) to pick a spot.

Save the data as the tool writes it into the image's GPS EXIF data.

You can download the uploaded file to your device.

What Information Does a Geotagged Photo Store?

Latitude – The precise north -south point on the Earth is provided.

Longitude – The East-West point is captured.

GPS Altitude – It includes the height above sea level when the picture was taken.

GPS Timestamp– It provides the direction the camera lens is pointing and the heading angle.

EXIF Metadata – It includes the date and time of the shot, image coordinates, camera settings, device info, and thumbnails.

Camera Metadata – It includes the camera's technical configuration, device model, serial number, white balance, focal length, ISO, flash usage, shutter speed, and aperture.

Date/Time- It shows the picture's timestamp.

Image Pixels Vs Metadata

The image pixels include the visual data- tiny dots of colour or brightness that make the visible image- the numerical grid and the core picture.

Image metadata includes data related to the photo, meaning the hidden text and tags stored inside the image file, plus EXIF data (technical details like camera model, GPS, ISO, and more).

Image Metadata may also include IPTC / XMP data like the photographer’s name, copyright, and captions.

Which Image Formats Can You Geotag?

JPG/JPEG – A universal format because it supports standard EXIF GPS metadata, which ensures any device, app, or OS can read the location.

PNG- It can identify the location metadata through EXIF or RIFF containers, but some standard image viewers fail to expose or read geotags when the files are in PNG format.

WebP - WebP files can be read, but many viewers struggle to read photo GPS location in the files.

HEIC – A high-efficiency format fully supports geolocation tags. It works smoothly on iOS and macOS, but HEIC faces compatibility issues in non-Apple apps and devices.

Geotag vs Geolocation vs GPS Metadata

Geotag – Geotag is the final label that contains geographical location records.

Geotagging - Geotagging is the process of adding geographical data such as latitude and longitude. The device saves the location data inside the hidden files called metadata (or EXIF data).

Geolocation- It determines the real-world physical location. It uses wi-fi networks, towers and satellite signals to get coordinates.

GPS Metadata – A photo's GPS location contains raw digital data generated with geolocation, including exact coordinates, timestamp, altitude, and other details related to the Global Positioning System.

Is Online Photo Geotagging Safe?

What happens to an uploaded image? Online photo geotagging is saved on servers and not processed locally. The image may be stored temporarily or permanently, depending on the site’s policies.

Is the image stored? Yes, the image is stored on servers or locally, depending on the provider's site policies.

Is processing local? It depends on the permissions the site grants. Look for client-side or local browser processing to ensure the file never leaves your computer.

Is an account required? It depends on the platform's policies. Many sites offer quick, free, anonymous geotagging where you can upload without registration, and they limit the personal data in the photo.

Is metadata modified? Only EXIF metadata is modified.

Does the original file change? No, the original file does not change. When you change, add, or update geolocation data, the original file remains unchanged, and the website creates a new modified copy.

Why Can't Some Apps See My Photos' GPS Location?

Some apps may not track photo GPS location because the Master location switch is disabled. Turn location on in Settings to enable it.

If the app permission is set to “Never” or “Denied,” change it to “Allow only while using the app.”

If battery saver restrictions are enabled or GPS signals are poor, the device may not be able to connect to satellites for geotagging.

Corrupt app data, a temporary cache, or system errors can limit location-processing requests.

What Happens When You Geotag a Photo?

The device may embed geographical image coordinates into the hidden file data, known as EXIF metadata. The camera or phone grabs signals from GPS satellites, Wi-Fi, or cell towers.

The moment you click a picture, it saves the location, along with the date and time, in the image file (in JPEG format), where you can view the details in EXIF Viewers.

How to Check If a Photo Is Already Geotagged

Open the file in the Photos app and swipe up, then tap the (i) or three-dot icon to search for geotag.

Right-click to view the image's properties and details to get coordinates, or open the image preview to view the GPS tab.

Run ExifTool in the command prompt to get longitude and latitude.

How Accurate Should a Photo's GPS Location Be?

Standard phone GPS is precise for map travel partners and group memories; however, naturalists and archaeological researchers have mixed opinions about location accuracy because it depends on satellite signal transmission.

GPS is accurate within 3 to 10 meters outdoors, but forests and tall buildings may block signals and cause errors.

GPS Coordinates in a Photo: Latitude vs Longitude

Latitude – It measures how far north or south the photo was taken relative to the Equator.

Longitude – It measures how far east or west the photo was taken relative to the Prime Meridian.

Decimal Coordinates – It expresses the location as a standard number with decimals.

Degrees, Minutes, Seconds – DMS displays coordinates by breaking each degree into smaller parts for greater precision.

How to Use Geotagged Photos for Local SEO

Take a real photo and rename the file to an unoptimised image (.JPG) with a keyword-rich, location-specific filename.

Open Google Maps to find the exact business location, use an online EXIF editor to add the coordinates, and add keywords and descriptions to the EXIF tags.
